SILVERSTAR, BC — Western Canada's first—and only—sanctioned downhill snow race returned to Silver Star resort this past weekend. Now in its third year, FrostBIKE 2015 saw bikes assault the ski slopes at the first official stop of the BC Cup in a test of will and traction as racers vied for a top spot, struggling to keep the rubber side down on the event's fastest course to date.
SNOWSHOE, WV — Snowshoe Bike Park recently announced its official opening day and 2015 schedule. The annual spring event—now in its fifth “official” year run by Poison Spider (the event was previously a Yeti Cycles spring demo)—is gaining momentum as an annual tradition kicking off the mountain bike season for Moab area riders as well as those from Colorado’s high country and other regions who believe Old Man Winter has overstayed his welcome.
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO — At the end of last summer, Whistler-based based Gravity Logic, Inc., unveiled the Flying Diamond trail, a new masterpiece of sculpted soil at Steamboat Bike Park. By the time were teased with this video, the lifts had stopped spinning, but it's definitely on our 2015 bike-it list.
GRAND TARGHEE, WY — Grand Targhee's bike park never really closes, even during ski season. The resort is one of the first to offer an extensive network of groomed, snowpacked singletrack for winter riding, helping it gain traction (pun intended) as the lift-served fat bike capital of the good ol' USA. The crew from 45NRTH discovered this for themselves on a recent trip to Targhee, and filmed this shredit of Evan Simula putting the Flowbeist and Dunderbiest tires through their paces.
HIGHLAND, NH — Aaron Chase sessions Highland Bike Park amidst the muck and mire of a New England winter aboard the Pivot Cycles LES Fat. Pivot used the video to announce the release of the LES Fat, its entry into to the big tire arena. The LES Fat accomodates up to a 5-inch tire on 27.5 or 29-inch traditional wheelsets.
As the days grow longer and the mercury rises, the white stuff begins to melt into the sort of primordial muck that makes snaggletoothed Englishmen into the stuff of legend (I’m looking at you, Danny Hart). But that too will soon give way to the tack and loam that only exist in magical fleeting moments upon the calendar or after a summer rain—the sort of dirt that allows any of us ride like gods, offering Velcro-like grip regardless of how on point our cornering skills are after a winter spent hibernating on the sofa. No one will believe how perfectly you roosted that first turn—no one. But until those perfect days are upon us, here are some early spring riding events and races in (mostly) dry and warm destinations to get you riding long before the nostril faucets stop dripping.
