Angel Fire, NM – When Angel Fire Bike Park was crowned the Best Bike Park in the Southwest from the 2013 Rider Choice Awards, its team made a pledge to make sure the park would be in tip top riding shape when the lift starts spinning on May 17th and they are taking that pledge seriously! The trail crew began to get things rolling towards the end of April when everyone arrived in full stoke, and 100% fired up to start getting the goods ready to share with you this summer despite some challenging weather...
THIS IS ANGEL FIRE AND THIS IS MOUNTAIN BIKING!
MTBParks.com is honored to have Jackie and Dante Harmony, aka Team Harmony among our own crew of Ambassadors, and as part of the trail crew at Angel Fire, they're bringing you the latest updates as everyone gets ready for opening weekend at Angel Fire Bike Park. Here's the report, hot off the press and straight from the trail...
The trail crew at Angel Fire Bike Park has been killing it since they all showed up for duties towards the end of April. They have been greeted by the mountain with the typical springtime madness that is unpredictable weather and a month of May which will likely record more snowfall than January. This, however cannot discourage our brave builders, as they have one job to do! That job is to build sick trails and the weather be damned!
Having won the MTBParks.com Best Bike Park in the Southwest award, the crew is eager to get to work and work for that title again for 2014.
A brief snowstorm got to the mountain at the same time the trail crew was getting ready for work and with chainsaws in hand, the crew set out to clear all of the deadfall from the 60 miles of trails that had blown down during the ridiculously windy winters that can happen in Angel Fire, New Mexico. After being snowed out on arrival for the first couple days, and the new machinery showing up just in time, the crew set to work on carving in a new section of green trail mid-mountain that will be a new favorite for beginners and novices called Easy Street.
The crew had to endure another snowstorm during the building of a huge bridge to span across Supreme DH and bunkered down mid-mountain with a cozy little campfire while the braving the harsh spring-winter conditions. This new section of trail will definitely be trail bike and family friendly.
With any luck, and a final break in the weather, we're hoping Easy Street will be ready for opening weekend. And with the abundant moisture that the mountain has received, there's no doubt that this new trail will be generating a lot of smiles along the way.
For those of you familiar with Angel Fire Bike Park, the word Candyland should get you excited. Towards the end of the season last year, the crew went in and gave the double black diamond jump trail a huge facelift with some nice big berms and option lines leading into the famous triple tables which have been completely reworked for more airtime and more stoke!
The crowd favorite blue trail at Angel Fire Bike Park, is the jumpy and bermy Boulderdash. Midway through Boulderdash, the crew has reworked a key section. The rework on this section will see riders sending themselves off a sculpted step-down and into a giant left hand berm thus restoring the flow that was originally intended. Another lower section of Boulderdash that was new at the end of last season has been beautifully reworked to increase flow and rider stoke.
The crew is also working on adding another bike carrier to each chair to get more bikes up the lift. The base of the Chile Express chairlift has been landscaped and there will be a few new routes designated to control bike traffic coming into the base area. The weather has been playing its usual tricks this time of year so bring your fenders and mud gear just in case.
