What to Expect Riding Evolution Bike Park at Crested Butte.
What type of rider would enjoy visiting Crested Butte?
The Evolution Bike Park at Crested Butte Mountain Resort is located in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Arguably one of the birth places of mountain biking, there is a rich and genuine bike culture here that is palpable even in town. There are plentiful opportunities throughout the region for all riders, but one would be remiss to pass through without spending at least a day in Evolution Bike Park.
The Evolution Bike Park trail network has grown a lot over the past six years and includes machine built trails catering to all levels of difficulty. From the fast, flowing berms, rollers, jumps and bridges of Avery, the Luge and Frequency, to the fast and steep off-camber World Cup-worthy Captain Jack and the near vertical boulder lines on Psycho Rocks, there is plenty to keep expeert-level downhill and freeriders happy.
But there are plenty of fast, flowing blues and greens here for less experienced riders that are so well built, they're sure to still be fun for more advanced riders.
Crested Butte also offers miles of classic Colorado singletrack that can be accessed via the chairlift for mostly descending rides, or climb these trails and "earn your turns" if you prefer via an uphill biking only trail out of the base area which allows the more masochistic riders to gain about 500 vertical and access the larger cross-country network without encountering any downhill traffic. Either way, there is plenty of sweet singletrack and riders can also connect them with the larger trail system in the north end of the valley.
The area has developed by offering a lot of diversity in terrain over the years, and when you add in the surrounding valley trails, there is truly something to make any mountain biker a believer in the Butte.
CBMR added two new trails to the Evolution Bike Park in 2014. Hotdogger, which is a two-mile, flowy green and Captain Jack, one of the most steep and technical trails on the mountain.
CBMR says a number of new trail segments in the works for the 2015 summer, and that the trail crew's goal each year to is to make Evolution Bike Park more accessible to novice riders through new and improved green trails, to keep challenging our expert riders with technical elements and to offer a path for progression for riders to get a little better each time they ride the mountain.
For those who are familiar with the park we will be adding a blue trail in the same area as Awakening. CBMR is also in the approval process to connect a trail from Westside to the Upper Loop which will give riders the opportunity to ride to or from town entirely on singletrack.
Another technical piece of trail that will be open by July 1, 2015 that offers another option off Avery and moves through some big rock features.
Bottom Line: The trail map keeps expanding and there will be some fresh dirt to roll over this summer.

Crested Butte, CO – In case you missed the Central States Cup stop at Crested Butte, CO earlier this year, here's the quick and dirty recap. The track was sick!! The pedally sections at the beginning and end were brutal. The off camber root sections were as gnarly as the rock garden, but the best was the fact that the track changed every time you went down it because it was so freshly cut.

Crested Butte, CO - Crested Butte is legendary as one of the birth places of mountain biking. While Marin, California may receive most of the fame (infamy?), Crested Butte was also one of the places that the earliest mountain bike pioneers called home. Unlike Marin,
Crested Butte is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen with my own two eyes; I've heard it compared to the Swiss Alps!
This bike park is very well built. Greens and blues are boring at some resorts, but here they are so fast and flowy, you can be an advanced rider and still have a blast ripping a green run.
Captain Jack gives you a taste of a true downhill race track, and even has some real loamy dirt—a rare find in the Rockies!
Psycho Rocks offers up some steep and chunky low-speed tech maneuvers.
It's all pretty rad.
With a history rich in mountain biking culture, there are plenty of trails in the area to explore if/when you need a break from chairlifts. There are some suffer fests for sure, but also some great shuttles—Doctor Park being one of my favorites.
